Overview
This is a highly collectible vintage ceramic cookie jar designed by Metlox Potteries as part of their whimsical kitchenware line. It features a spherical body adorned with raised, hand-painted relief representations of classic cookies—including a chocolate chip, a heart-shaped cookie, and a wafer—all topped with a lid featuring a walnut-shaped finial.
Story
In the 1950s, American kitchens transformed into colorful, joyful spaces. Metlox captured this optimism by designing a jar literally covered in the treats it was meant to hold. It turned a simple countertop container into a playful, sculptural game of hide-and-seek.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1927 by Willis Prouty, Metlox Potteries of Manhattan Beach, California, originally produced ceramic neon sign letters before transitioning to dinnerware and art ware. Under the 'Poppytrail' division, they became legendary for their vibrant glazes, durable earthenware, and highly imaginative novelty cookie jars.
Condition & Value
The jar appears to be in good vintage condition with vibrant glaze colors. There is minor wear consistent with age, but no large visible cracks or major chips are apparent in the photo.
