Overview
An ornate Italian majolica ceramic urn featuring a reticulated (pierced) neck, scrolled gilt handles, and a hand-painted relief scene depicting classical mythological figures in a sylvan landscape. The piece is constructed in sections secured by an internal metal rod, a traditional method for complex European decorative ceramics.
Story
Crafted in post-war Italy, this urn revived the dramatic, theatrical spirit of the Baroque era. Its relief scene of playful cherubs and classical figures offered 20th-century homes a touch of aristocratic European romance.
Maker / Origin
While bearing an impressed mark on the underside reminiscent of historic Italian workshops, this piece was produced during the mid-century revival of Italian majolica. Workshops in regions like Bassano del Grappa and Florence specialized in exporting these highly decorative, hand-painted Capodimonte-style wares to eager international markets.
Condition & Value
The urn shows some wear to the painted finish on the square base and minor oxidation on the metal threaded rod underneath. There are no obvious major cracks or chips visible in the pierced reticulation, which is highly prone to damage. Excellent condition for these delicate pieces commands the higher end of the range.
