Overview
An authentic Japanese shin-hanga woodblock print titled 'Snow at Hiei Shrine' (社頭の雪 日枝神社) by master artist Kawase Hasui. Designed in 1931, this specific impression was struck from the original woodblocks by the Watanabe Color Print Co. bearing Watanabe's 7mm round seal and red margin seal.
Story
In 1931 Tokyo, Kawase Hasui captured the hushed stillness of falling snow at Hie Shrine. Master carvers and printers layered dozens of impressions to evoke the quiet drama of two figures sharing an umbrella.
Maker / Origin
Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was the leading landscape figure of Japan's Shin-hanga ('New Prints') movement. Partnering with visionary publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, Hasui blended classical ukiyo-e traditions with modern Western realism, light, and perspective. In 1956, the Japanese government recognized Hasui's craft as a Living National Treasure.
Condition & Value
The print shows strong, vibrant colors with rich reds and blues; the verso reveals clear bleed-through typical of authentic block printing. There appears to be minor handling wear and slight paper discoloration/foxing at the upper margin edge, but overall very good condition without major fading.
