Overview
An elegant ovoid porcelain jar decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, depicting four scholars gathered around a table playing the ancient strategy game of Weiqi (Go). The reverse features a classic landscape of rolling mountains, swirling clouds, and a distant pavilion, framed by a stylized flame border at the collar.
Story
Weiqi, the ancient game shown here, was one of the four essential arts a Chinese scholar had to master to prove their moral and intellectual refinement. This jar served as an aspirational piece of decor, celebrating the quiet pursuit of wisdom over worldly chaos.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece comes from the historic kiln complex of Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of the world for over a millennium. The artisans here preserved centuries-old techniques of hand-painting underglaze cobalt, keeping traditional literati themes alive during a period of massive national transition.
Condition & Value
The jar appears to be in very good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or major restorations. There is minor firing debris and typical wear/soiling on the unglazed foot rim, which is consistent with age and expected. Excellent condition for porcelain of this era commands a premium.
