Overview
This striking ceramic tulipiere features a central fluted neck surrounded by six individual flower spouts, decorated with stylized, gilded figures reminiscent of ancient cave paintings or Etruscan tomb art. The combination of a classical multi-spouted floral vessel with whimsical, primitive-modernist gold illustrations captures the playful historicism of mid-century Italian art pottery.
Story
Post-war Italian ceramicists looked to their ancient soil for inspiration, reviving Etruscan and Roman motifs with a modern, stylish twist. This vessel reimagines the traditional Dutch tulipiere as a canvas for ancient hunters and stylized beasts.
Maker / Origin
During the mid-20th century, Italian workshops like those in Sesto Fiorentino, Deruta, and Venice (such as San Polo) flourished by exporting imaginative art pottery to eager American and European markets. Designers blended historic Italian forms—from Renaissance majolica to ancient Etruscan slipware—with the glamorous, gilded aesthetics of the Hollywood Regency era.
Condition & Value
The vase is in good vintage condition with light wear to the gold luster on the rim and spouts, and typical crazing to the white glaze. There is some minor surface dirt and residue inside the spouts from previous use, but no major chips, cracks, or structural repairs are visible. Well-preserved gilding greatly helps retain its value.
