Overview
This is a charming collection of vintage sewing buttons preserved on their original retail cards, showcasing a variety of materials, colors, and mid-century designs. The collection includes classic utility buttons, marbled plastics, carved-look designs, and a highly decorative novelty set featuring hand-painted ceramic-style hats and postage stamps.
Story
During the mid-20th century home sewing boom, local fabric stores like the Piece Goods Shop were community hubs of creativity. These cards represent the tactile choices made by home dressmakers selecting the perfect finishing touch for a handmade garment. The whimsical 'Alma Buttons' set on the checkered card captures the playful novelty trends of the late 1970s and 1980s.
Maker / Origin
This collection features prominent names in American sewing history, including Lansing and Coats & Clark—a company with roots stretching back to the 19th-century thread mills of Scotland and New Jersey. Many cards bear the branding of 'Piece Goods Shop,' a beloved regional chain of fabric stores that supplied generations of Midwestern and Southern home sewists before closing in the late 1990s.
Condition & Value
The buttons themselves appear to be in excellent, unused condition. The original paper cards show minor wear, toning, and some missing buttons (such as on the Coats & Clark and one of the Piece Goods Shop cards), which is typical for vintage sewing stock and slightly reduces the value of those specific cards.
