Overview
This striking porcelain vase features a vibrant coral-red ground decorated with a mythical qilin and a dragon amidst stylized clouds. The neck and foot are adorned with underglaze blue ruyi-head and scroll borders, creating a bold contrast with the overglaze enamels and gilded details.
Story
Created during a period of intense artistic revival, this vase features the qilin, a mythical beast of good fortune. Legend says a qilin appeared to the mother of Confucius just before his birth, cementing its status as a harbinger of greatness.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece was crafted by skilled artisans in Jingdezhen, the historic porcelain capital of China. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these workshops specialized in reviving imperial designs of the Kangxi and Qianlong eras for a booming global export market.
Condition & Value
The vase shows minor surface wear, light scratches to the coral enamel, and some rubbing to the gold gilt on the rim and dragon motif. The unglazed foot rim shows expected oxidation and minor firing grit, but no major chips, cracks, or restorations are visible.
