Overview
An impressive and highly detailed Chinese hanging scroll painting on silk, depicting an elegant imperial garden gathering. It bears the signature and seal of Lang Shining (Giuseppe Castiglione), the famous Italian Jesuit missionary who became a court painter to the Qing emperors.
Story
In 1715, an Italian Jesuit priest arrived in Beijing and forever changed Chinese imperial art. Giuseppe Castiglione, known in China as Lang Shining, fused Western perspective and shading with traditional Chinese ink painting on silk. This scroll captures that legendary courtly style, depicting a vibrant, idealized gathering of scholars and nobles in a sprawling palace garden.
Maker / Origin
Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766) served under three Qing emperors: Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong. He was highly respected for his ability to blend European realism—particularly in his rendering of light, shadow, and three-dimensional space—with traditional Chinese materials and subjects.
Condition & Value
The scroll appears to be in very good overall condition with vibrant colors and minimal visible creasing or staining to the painted silk surface. The silk mounting borders are intact and clean. Excellent preservation of the delicate pigments suggests it has been stored carefully away from direct sunlight.
