Story

Founded in 1851 as a clock shop, Smiths became Britain's premier timekeeper. Sir Edmund Hillary famously wore a Smiths watch to the summit of Mt. Everest in 1953, proving British horology could conquer the globe.

Maker / Origin

Smiths (originally S. Smith & Sons) was an industrial giant in Great Britain, producing aviation instruments, automotive gauges, and fine mechanical timepieces. During the mid-20th century, their Cheltenham factory produced high-grade mechanical movements, making Smiths the last major indigenous watch manufacture in England before the quartz crisis.

Condition & Value

The dial exhibits mild aging and light spotting (patina) consistent with age. The case and crystal show minor surface scuffs, and it has been fitted with a modern woven NATO-style strap. Original unrestored dials are preferred by collectors, though running condition strongly impacts price.
