Overview

A classic 1960s vinyl and foam collection pennant filled with over 50 vintage European advertising stick pins ('speldjes'). Features iconic Dutch and international brands including Pan Am, TWA, SPAR, Honig, Stella Artois, Castella, and Opel.

Story

In the mid-1960s, a massive collecting craze swept Dutch schoolyards, where kids traded company stick pins like currency. This banner preserves an authentic slice of everyday European pop culture and grocery history.

Maker / Origin

The pennant itself bears the 'Co-op' embossed mark, while the pins were manufactured by various European novelty and medal makers (such as Robbins or local badge producers) as promotional giveaways for food, fuel, airline, and detergent brands.

Condition & Value

The blue vinyl pennant and interior foam show typical age-related discoloration, crumbling, and staining. The pins themselves show light surface wear and minor oxidation on the needle shanks, consistent with age. Intact collections on original banners maintain better decorative value than loose pins.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • ▲ Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • ▲ Better-than-average condition for the category
  • ▲ Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • ▼ Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • ▼ Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • ▼ Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
