Overview
An incredibly charming Japanese kakejiku (hanging scroll) painted on silk, depicting two children in traditional winter kimonos playing before a massive, wonderfully expressive snowman. The minimalist, almost modern design of the snowman's face contrasts beautifully with the fine, classical detailing of the children's patterned garments and the falling snow.
Story
In early 20th-century Japan, the traditional winter snowman, or 'Yuki Daruma', was modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen. This artist captured a delightfully modern, melancholic expression that feels shockingly contemporary.
Maker / Origin
The signature and seal read 'Kason' (輝石/輝山), likely referring to an artist active during the late Meiji or Taisho eras who worked in the Nihonga style. Nihonga painters sought to preserve traditional Japanese artistic techniques and subjects while subtly incorporating Western perspectives on light, space, and emotional expression.
Condition & Value
The scroll is in good antique condition with minor toning and light creasing to the silk consistent with age and rolling. The mounting, silk borders, and wooden storage box are well-preserved. Excellent condition for its age, which helps maintain its value.
