Overview

This is an exquisite late Victorian vanity or tea serving tray featuring a hand-painted or transfer-enhanced porcelain plaque set within an ornate cast brass (ormolu-style) gallery with scroll handles. The central scene depicts Flora or Aurora with a winged putto scattering floral garlands across an ethereal pastel sky, a quintessential Rococo Revival motif.

Story

Turn-of-the-century boudoirs celebrated romantic escapism with mythological scenes. Painted after French Rococo masters like Boucher, these elegant trays brought the luxury of 18th-century Versailles into everyday Victorian homes.

Maker / Origin

Blank porcelain plaques produced in regions like Limoges, France, or Silesia and Bavaria in Germany were frequently sent to decorating studios or painted by talented porcelain artists before being fitted into brass mounts by specialized metal smiths. An indistinct artist's mark or signature appears in the lower right, typical of professional studio china painters of the period.

Condition & Value

The porcelain surface appears intact with vibrant colors and no obvious cracks or chips visible from the top view. The brass gallery and handles show natural age patina, which enhances its antique character; preserving the original finish maintains value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
