Overview
A complete set of four hand-rubbed, hand-carved wooden snack trays featuring an organic, biomorphic shape and integrated cork coasters. These trays represent the height of 'cocktail culture' design, intended for casual entertaining in front of the television.
Story
Post-war 1950s America saw the living room transform as the television became the new hearth. These 'Kala-Wood' trays were Japan's elegant answer to the American demand for stylish, portable dining solutions for the TV age.
Maker / Origin
Imperial International was a major mid-century importer based in New York and Toronto, specializing in bringing high-quality Japanese craftsmanship to the North American market. They were instrumental in popularizing the 'exotic' wood aesthetic that defined the 1960s bachelor pad and family den.
Condition & Value
The trays appear to be in excellent vintage condition with the cork intact. The original box shows some shelf wear and a small puncture, but remains structurally sound. Keeping the set together in this box preserves its maximum value. Complete sets in the original box are highly desirable for MCM collectors.
