Overview
A vintage die-cast metal double-decker London bus toy manufactured by Matchbox to commemorate the 1977 Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Painted in a striking metallic silver rather than the traditional London red, it features detailed side decals marking the 1952-1977 royal milestone and a red plastic interior.
Story
In 1977, Great Britain erupted in street parties to celebrate 25 years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. Lesney Products captured this national fever by casting their iconic London bus in gleaming silver. It turned a daily commuter symbol into a royal souvenir.
Maker / Origin
Lesney Products was founded in 1947 by school friends Leslie Smith and Rodney Smith. They revolutionized the toy industry when co-founder Jack Odell designed a tiny brass steam roller that fit inside a matchbox for his daughter to take to school. This sparked the legendary 'Matchbox' brand, which went on to produce millions of highly detailed, affordable die-cast vehicles in England.
Condition & Value
The toy appears to be in very good, gently played-with condition. The silver paint shows minor wear on the raised edges, and the paper decals are intact and legible, though showing slight aging. The absence of the original box keeps the value toward the lower-to-middle end of the range.
