Overview
An exceptional pair of heavy, dark-patinated bronze elephant sculptures, meticulously detailed with stylized, rhythmic hide folds and elaborate ceremonial trappings. Each elephant is adorned with a saddlecloth depicting a powerful five-clawed imperial dragon rising above stylized waves, topped by a separate, highly detailed floral-scroll cap.
Story
During the Meiji restoration, master metalworkers who once forged samurai swords pivoted to creating breathtaking decorative art for the West. These elephants, symbols of wisdom and peace, were designed to dazzle international collectors.
Maker / Origin
While the underside bears a clear four-character cast seal mark, further archival research is required to tie this specific mark to a known Tokyo or Kyoto workshop active during the golden age of Japanese export bronzes. Workshops of this era, such as those of Genryusai Seiya, frequently specialized in highly realistic and stylized animal subjects for the international market.
Condition & Value
The bronzes show a beautiful, deep-brown original patina with minor surface dust and light rubbing consistent with age. The tusks show some natural discoloration and minor wear where they insert into the bronze. Excellent overall condition, which strongly supports their value.
