Story

During the early 17th century, Japanese tea masters commissioned custom porcelain directly from Jingdezhen potters. They favored slight imperfections, expressive brushwork, and natural charm over rigid imperial perfection. This bowl crossed the East China Sea centuries ago to become a prized implement in Japanese tea ceremonies.

Maker / Origin

The folk kilns (minyao) of Jingdezhen in southern China were the global capital of porcelain production. While imperial kilns focused on flawless precision, the private kilns catering to Japanese trade developed a whimsical, rapid painting style. Potters worked with great speed, creating dynamic cobalt blue compositions that captivated Japanese aesthetic sensibilities.

Condition & Value

Appears in very good antique condition overall, showing characteristic minor glaze rim wear and minor kiln grit sticking to the unglazed foot ring, both typical of late Ming period Jingdezhen production. Excellent preservation of glaze gloss and cobalt color with no obvious structural restoration visible in photos.
