Overview
This is a pair of nested, highly decorative wooden boxes featuring intricate Sorrento-style marquetry and micro-mosaic inlay. The larger box showcases a beautiful geometric starburst pattern on its sides and a contrasting light-wood top, while the smaller box nested on top features a classic central figurative or floral cartouche framed by delicate geometric borders.
Story
In the 1800s, wealthy European travelers on the Grand Tour flocked to southern Italy, desperate for a portable piece of Italian sunshine. Local Sorrento artisans answered by turning olivewood into breathtaking, puzzle-like wooden mosaics.
Maker / Origin
While these boxes do not bear a visible signature, they are crafted in the famous tradition of Sorrento, Italy. Workshops like those of Gargiulo, Grandville, or the local craft schools perfected this technique, turning the region into the world capital of micro-marquetry during the Victorian era.
Condition & Value
The boxes appear to be in good antique condition with a warm, aged patina. There is some minor surface wear and potential light fading to the top veneer of the larger box, which is common for pieces of this age. Excellent preservation of the delicate inlay corners will keep the value toward the higher end of the range.
