Overview
An eclectic assortment of used and postmarked United States postage stamps, featuring commemorative issues from the mid-20th century alongside a few earlier definitive issues and later 1990s commemoratives. The collection includes notable pieces like the 1950s 'Religious Freedom' and 'Nassau Hall' issues, alongside a 1912 postmarked envelope fragment from Los Angeles.
Story
Every stamp in this collection served as a tiny, traveling billboard for American history, culture, and values. From celebrating the 250th anniversary of Benjamin Franklin to honoring the Space Shuttle and rock legend Jimi Hendrix, these miniature engravings carried personal letters across the country. They represent a time when the daily mail was the primary thread connecting American households.
Maker / Origin
These stamps were designed and printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (and later private contractors for the USPS), utilizing highly skilled master engravers who carved incredibly detailed designs into steel plates by hand. The artistry of mid-century stamp design represents some of the finest miniature graphic design of the era.
Condition & Value
The stamps are in mixed, used condition. Many are roughly torn or clipped on paper, some have bent perforations, and several show heavy cancellation marks. The 1912 envelope fragment shows significant browning and wear consistent with age. This is a common, hobbyist-level accumulation of used, off-paper and on-paper US stamps.
