Overview

This exquisite low table features natural bamboo poles finished in rich black and mottled red URUSHI lacquer over a fine woven-mat inset surface. Designed for display or tea ceremonies, it retains structural curved bamboo support braces and authentic period joinery.

Story

During the Taisho era, Westerners living in Japan collected elegant functional art like this low display table. Crafted from natural bamboo and sap-derived urushi lacquer, it served as a stand for cherished bonsai trees or tea service items.

Maker / Origin

Crafted by skilled Japanese bamboo artisans (take-zaiku) and lacquer masters, pieces like this required months of preparation. The craft involved harvesting mature bamboo, bending it with heat, and applying multiple paper-thin coats of sap from the toxic Toxicodendron vernicifluum tree.

Condition & Value

Shows honest age-appropriate wear, including flaking and chips to the outer black lacquer revealing the undercoat and raw bamboo beneath. Metal fittings show mild oxidation, but structural joints and bent bamboo support bars remain intact.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
