Overview
An ornate, circular openwork pendant in the Renaissance Revival style, featuring a central bezel-set blue sapphire surrounded by concentric bands of rose-cut diamonds, square-cut emeralds, and a border of baroque seed pearls. Suspended from a delicate, hand-linked seed pearl chain, the piece showcases the characteristic silver-topped gold or gilded silver construction typical of Austro-Hungarian historicist jewelry.
Story
Crafted during the late 19th-century romantic revival, this pendant was designed to evoke the fairy-tale opulence of the Renaissance courts. Its intricate, multi-layered design served as a wearable piece of history for the wealthy elite of Vienna and Budapest.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece is executed in the highly recognizable style of Austro-Hungarian workshops active in Budapest and Vienna during the late 19th century. These makers, such as Hermann Ratzersdorfer and Karl Bressler, specialized in reviving Renaissance, Baroque, and Gothic designs, combining colorful gemstones, pearls, and intricate metalwork to create dramatic, theatrical jewelry.
Condition & Value
The necklace appears to be in very good antique condition. There is a beautiful, natural dark patina on the silver portions of the pendant. The seed pearls on the chain and border show some typical organic variation and minor wear consistent with age, but appear intact. The gemstones show light surface wear under magnification.
