Overview
A beautifully preserved Spanish Colonial carved wood devotional figure of the Infant Jesus, standing upon an ornate gilded base. The figure features delicate polychrome paint, inset glass eyes, and holds a silver-toned globus cruciger (orb and cross) while wearing a silver-toned 'tres potencias' (three rays of light) halo.
Story
Devotional figures of the Infant Jesus were central to private home altars in the Spanish Empire. Nuns in colonial convents often cared for these statues as a spiritual exercise, dressing them in elaborate, handmade miniature garments.
Maker / Origin
While the specific sculptor remains anonymous, as was typical for religious guild artisans of the period, this piece reflects the highly skilled workshops of the Spanish Baroque tradition. These carvers and painters worked under strict guild regulations to ensure theological and artistic quality.
Condition & Value
The statue appears to be in remarkably good condition with minimal paint loss or flaking, which is common for wood of this age. The gilding on the base shows a beautiful, authentic patina with minor wear. The presence of the delicate silver halo rays and orb greatly enhances its completeness.
