Overview
An exceptionally large and dynamically painted Japanese export porcelain jar decorated in the classic Sometsuke-Nishiki (underglaze blue with overglaze polychrome enamels and gold) style. The exterior is densely populated with auspicious mythical beasts, including a soaring dragon, a swooping phoenix, and playful shishi (guardian lions) amidst stylized clouds and geometric diaper patterns.
Story
During the late 17th century, civil war in China halted Dutch trade, forcing merchants to turn to Japan's Arita kilns. Japanese potters responded by creating these explosive, colorful masterpieces to dazzle European royalty.
Maker / Origin
While the specific workshop remains anonymous, this jar was crafted by master artisans in the Arita region, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. These potters perfected the complex multi-firing process required to combine deep cobalt underglazes with delicate overglaze enamels and rich gilding, establishing a global standard for luxury ceramics.
Condition & Value
The photos show the jar in generally good condition with vibrant enamels and intact gilding. There is typical light wear to the gold on the rim and minor surface scratches consistent with age. No major cracks or large chips are immediately visible, though the unglazed foot shows expected shelf wear and discoloration.
