Overview
This is a striking circular cast metal wall plaque featuring a deeply embossed relief of blooming irises. The design is heavily inspired by the organic, flowing lines of the Art Nouveau movement, highlighted with contrasting silver-toned and gold-leaf-style finishes against a dark, patinated background.
Story
Irises became a global symbol of artistic rebellion in the late 1800s when Western artists fell in love with Japanese woodblock prints. This plaque captures that exact cross-cultural obsession, turning a simple garden flower into a dramatic statement of flowing, organic modernism.
Maker / Origin
While this specific piece does not bear a maker's mark, it belongs to a rich tradition of mid-century decorative arts that revived the turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau aesthetic. During the 1960s and 1970s, workshops across Europe and Asia produced high-quality brass and mixed-metal home decor to satisfy a global craze for vintage, organic designs.
Condition & Value
The front of the plaque shows excellent preservation of the gold and silver finishes with minimal wear. The reverse shows typical oxidation, minor scuffs, and a thrift store barcode sticker, but the hanging hardware is intact. Excellent vintage condition.
