Overview
This is a beautifully rendered, limited-edition etching depicting the historic, steep-roofed gassho-zukuri farmhouses of Shirakawa-go blanketed in deep winter snow. Signed in pencil 'K. Hasegawa' and numbered 128/517, the print captures the quiet, spiritual isolation of Japan's alpine regions.
Story
Deep in the remote Shogawa River Valley, these unique 'prayer-hands' thatched roofs were designed to withstand some of the heaviest snowfall in the world. This print captures a vanishing way of communal Japanese mountain life. The artist braved freezing alpine conditions to sketch a landscape that is now a protected UNESCO World Heritage site.
Maker / Origin
While many collectors associate the name Hasegawa with the legendary Paris-based master of mezzotint Kiyoshi Hasegawa (1891–1980), several mid-century Japanese printmakers shared this surname and worked in traditional etching styles.
Condition & Value
The print appears to be in good condition, housed under a mat and frame. There is no immediate evidence of foxing, water damage, or severe fading, though it has not been examined outside of the frame. Keeping it out of direct sunlight will preserve the delicate pencil signature and paper tones.
