Overview
An exceptional Ko-Imari porcelain bowl featuring a central medallion of the Daoist immortal Kinko Sennin riding a giant carp, surrounded by vibrant red 'akadama' (red ball) and hanging tassel motifs. The exterior is richly decorated with dense floral scrolls in underglaze blue, overglaze red enamel, and lavish gilding, characteristic of high-end 'Kenjo-Imari' (presentation-grade ware).
Story
During Japan's Genroku era, wealthy merchants and feudal lords craved dazzling, theatrical art. This bowl depicts Kinko Sennin, a legendary Chinese immortal who promised his disciples he would return from the underwater kingdom, dramatically emerging from the waves on the back of a giant carp.
Maker / Origin
Produced in the specialized kilns of Arita, this piece represents the pinnacle of Ko-Imari (Old Imari) multi-colored porcelain. The artisans of this period mastered the complex 'Akae' (red enamel) and 'Kinjande' (gold-brocade style) techniques, catering to both the domestic elite and the demanding European export market through the Dutch East India Company.
Condition & Value
The bowl appears to be in excellent antique condition with vibrant enamels and intact gilding. Minor kiln grit, tiny glaze pops, and typical wear to the foot rim are present, which are consistent with genuine Genroku-period production. The accompanying wooden box shows natural aging and wear.
