Story

During the mid-20th century, a boom in international travel sparked a global fascination with African wildlife art. Local Kamba and Makonde artisans transformed ancient carving traditions into a thriving export movement, capturing the majesty of the 'Big Five' for a captivated Western audience.

Maker / Origin

While this piece is unsigned, it is highly characteristic of the skilled woodcarving cooperatives of East Africa, particularly the Kamba people of Kenya. Kamba carvers are internationally renowned for their extraordinary ability to visualize a finished animal within a raw block of wood, carving entirely by hand using traditional adzes and chisels without preliminary sketches.

Condition & Value

The sculpture appears to be in excellent vintage condition with a rich, well-developed patina. There are no obvious cracks, splits, or missing elements (such as the horns, which are frequently damaged on these pieces). Regular waxing will preserve the wood's moisture and prevent future splitting, maintaining its value.
