Overview
A substantial oval devotional medal in silver or silvered metal, featuring the Virgin Mary in the 'Miraculous' pose with the Latin prayer 'Monstra Te Esse Matrem.' The reverse identifies it as a badge for the 'Congrégation des Enfants de Marie' (Children of Mary), framed by symbolic lilies and an unengraved banner for a member's name.
Story
Born from the 1830 visions of St. Catherine Labouré in Paris, this medal was the 'graduation' gift for young women completing years of spiritual study. The Latin plea 'Show yourself to be a mother' was a secret handshake of devotion in 19th-century France. This specific example remains unengraved, a 'blank slate' that never received its intended owner's name.
Maker / Origin
While often unsigned, these medals were produced by specialized religious goldsmiths in France to meet the massive demand of the Marian revival. The 'Children of Mary' sodality became a global phenomenon, but the finest medals—like this one with its high-relief casting—remained a hallmark of French Catholic craftsmanship.
Condition & Value
The medal shows a beautiful, soft patina consistent with age. There is minor surface wear to the high points of the Virgin's face and hands, but the Latin lettering remains exceptionally crisp. The lack of engraving on the reverse banner is a plus for collectors who prefer 'mint' unassigned pieces. Condition is very good.
