Overview
This is a fine Japanese porcelain tokkuri (sake flask) decorated in underglaze blue using the historic fukizumi (blown-ink) stencil technique. It depicts a leaping hare reserved in white against a misty cobalt ground, accented by a dark iron-washed rim and a discreet gold lacquer (kintsugi) repair.
Story
Japanese potters created this leaping hare by blowing powdered cobalt pigment through a bamboo pipe around a hand-cut paper stencil. The motif evokes the beloved moon rabbit of Japanese folklore.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned on the unglazed foot ring, this piece hails from the venerable porcelain tradition of Hizen (modern Saga Prefecture), home to Arita and Hasami wares. These kilns have specialized in refined underglaze blue (sometsuke) and stencil-resist techniques since the early 17th century.
Condition & Value
Very good vintage condition overall with clear glaze gloss and an unblemished body. There is a small rim chip expertly repaired with a gold kintsugi-style mend, visible at the top edge. The repair adds historic charm, keeping value stable.
