Overview
An elegant Japanese hanging scroll (kakemono) depicting the fourth lunar month, painted in ink and color on silk. The composition is a direct, respectful homage to the famous 'Twelve Lunar Months' series by the legendary Ming Dynasty master Qiu Ying, showing scholars and ladies enjoying a spring garden with blooming magnolias and peonies.
Story
Created in Japan around 1910, this scroll bridges two empires. It replicates a celebrated Chinese Ming masterpiece to celebrate the arrival of early summer, marked by the blooming of white magnolias and lush garden peonies.
Maker / Origin
The signature reads 'Kaisei Goro Seining' (海西五郎世寧), a Japanese artist working in the late 19th or early 20th century. The name 'Seining' (Shining in Japanese) is a direct nod to Giuseppe Castiglione, the famous Jesuit court painter to the Qing Emperors, signaling the artist's deep admiration for classical Chinese court painting styles.
Condition & Value
The painting appears to be in very good condition with minor, expected age-toning to the silk and light creasing from being rolled. The mounting is intact and clean. Excellent preservation of the delicate mineral pigments greatly supports the value.
