Overview
A standard circulation 10-cent Euro coin minted by Greece, featuring the portrait of Rigas Fereos (Velestinlis). The reverse displays the common European map design used across the Eurozone.
Story
Rigas Fereos was a Greek writer and revolutionary who dreamed of a pan-Balkan uprising against Ottoman rule. He is a national hero whose vision of freedom predated the Greek War of Independence. This tiny piece of brass carries the face of a man who died for the idea of liberty.
Maker / Origin
While the common side was designed by Luc Luycx of the Royal Belgian Mint, the Greek national side was designed by artist Georgios Stamatopoulos. Stamatopoulos is the prolific hand behind most of Greece's modern coinage and several commemorative Euro designs.
Condition & Value
The coin shows signs of circulation wear and minor surface oxidation. This is typical for pocket change and generally keeps the value at face level. Excellent condition would only apply to uncirculated specimens. As a common circulation coin with millions minted, its value is primarily its face value (approx. $0.11 USD).
