Overview

An exquisite Chinese porcelain shallow dish featuring hand-painted Famille Verte enameled botanical motifs, including orchids, rocks, and peonies within a patterned diaper border. The exterior rim is glazed in a deep cobalt blue, surrounding an unglazed foot ring and a central underglaze blue six-character Kangxi reign mark.

Story

Jingdezhen potters in the late 19th century frequently painted 17th-century Kangxi reign marks on fine export and domestic wares to honor classic Qing artistry. This dish showcases vibrant translucent enamels crafted in the traditional Wucai style.

Maker / Origin

Produced in Jingdezhen, the world's historic capital of porcelain production, where specialized artisans divided labor between wheel-throwing, glazing, and intricate overglaze enamel painting. Workshop masters relied on generations of passed-down recipes to achieve the translucent, gem-like enamel palette seen on this dish.

Condition & Value

Good overall condition with minor glaze imperfections and small chips or surface flakes on the exterior blue enamel. The painted enamels on the interior remain bright and well-preserved. Minor wear slightly reduces collector value but does not ruin display appeal.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
