Overview
This is a classic American Eastlake movement three-drawer commode or nightstand, crafted from rich walnut with incised geometric details. It features its original, highly desirable white Carrara marble top, designed to withstand the spills of daily washbasin use, and is accented with white porcelain pull knobs.
Story
In the 1880s, these marble-topped chests were the ultimate bedroom luxury, serving as washstands before indoor plumbing. The incised geometric lines were a direct rebellion against the fussy, dust-catching curves of earlier Victorian styles.
Maker / Origin
While often produced by regional Grand Rapids, Michigan manufacturers who dominated the late-19th-century furniture boom, these pieces championed the design philosophy of Charles Eastlake. Eastlake believed in honest, functional craftsmanship with simple decorative elements that could be appreciated by the rising middle class.
Condition & Value
The nightstand appears to be in good vintage condition with a beautiful patina. The marble top seems intact without major visible cracks, though close inspection for staining or hairline fractures is recommended. Minor surface wear on the wood is consistent with age and does not significantly hurt the value.
