Overview
This charming vintage necklace features a heart-shaped pendant carved from natural bovine bone, depicting a stylized lotus flower in relief. The pendant is suspended from a brass-tone link chain interspersed with smooth, oval-shaped white glass or bone beads and a single amber-colored glass accent bead. It represents the popular mid-to-late 20th-century revival of organic materials in personal adornment.
Story
During the 1970s, a global fashion movement rejected synthetic plastics in favor of natural materials. Artisans in India carved these intricate lotus hearts to supply bohemian boutiques across the West, blending ancient spiritual symbols with modern romantic style.
Maker / Origin
While the individual carver remains anonymous, this piece is the product of cottage-industry workshops in regions like Uttar Pradesh, India, which have specialized in bone and horn carving for centuries. These artisans adapted their traditional skills—originally used for architectural inlays and royal decorative objects—to create fashionable jewelry for the export market.
Condition & Value
The necklace is in very good vintage condition. The carved bone pendant shows a lovely natural patina with minor surface grime in the deep crevices of the carving, which actually enhances the depth of the design. The brass-tone chain shows mild oxidation consistent with age. Excellent preservation of the delicate wire wraps.
