Overview

This is a beautifully preserved vintage Marble's Outing Set No. 301, featuring a waterproof match safe and a brass pocket compass nestled in its original presentation box. Known as the gold standard of early 20th-century outdoor gear, these sets were essential survival equipment for hunters, scouts, and adventurers.

Story

In 1898, Webster Marble revolutionized outdoor survival by inventing the safety axe and waterproof match safe. This compact kit kept matches dry and adventurers oriented, becoming a trusted companion for generations of American woodsmen.

Maker / Origin

Founded by Webster L. Marble in Gladstone, Michigan, the Marble Safety Axe Company (later Marble Arms & Mfg. Co.) became legendary for inventing practical, high-quality outdoor gear. Their innovative designs, from safety axes to waterproof match safes, set the standard for the modern outdoor recreation industry and were famously used by Teddy Roosevelt and Admiral Peary.

Condition & Value

The set appears to be in excellent vintage condition. The cardboard box shows minor shelf wear and light staining but remains structurally sound with bright graphics. The nickel plating on the match safe is bright with minimal pocket wear, and the brass compass has a lovely, natural patina.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
