This pair of meoto yunomi (matching husband-and-wife teacups) features vibrant overglaze enamel work (iro-e) illustrating playing children (karako) surrounded by lush floral vines against a patterned coral-red background. Hand-crafted in Kyoto, these teacups combine underglaze cobalt blue lattice borders inside the rim with rich enamel painting on the exterior.
Story
Karako, or 'Chinese children' motifs, entered Japanese ceramic art in the Edo period as traditional symbols of innocence, prosperity, and family happiness. Paired as meoto yunomi, with one slightly larger than the other, these cups honor the daily Japanese ritual of sharing tea with a spouse.
Maker / Origin
Kitamura Gazen is a respected Kyoto ceramicist known for continuing the delicate, colorful traditions of Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki porcelain. The Gazen kiln produces refined tableware that blends historic Chinese-inspired motifs with the subtle elegance favored in Kyoto tea culture.
