Overview
A vintage collection featuring two classic Model C View-Master stereoscopic viewers made of black Bakelite, accompanied by an assortment of early paper-backed reels and original blue-and-yellow sleeves. These viewers utilized paired Kodachrome transparency slides to create a stunning, three-dimensional visual experience that captivated mid-century audiences.
Story
Introduced at the 1939 New York World's Fair, the View-Master was originally marketed to adults as an alternative to scenic postcards. This Model C, produced between 1946 and 1955, allowed post-war families to travel the globe from their living rooms.
Maker / Origin
Sawyer's Inc. started as a postcard company before partnering with inventor William Gruber, who had the brilliant idea to mount paired 16mm Kodachrome slides on a circular paper disc. Their creation became an overnight sensation, eventually shifting from a scenic travelogue tool to one of the most beloved toy brands of the 20th century under GAF ownership.
Condition & Value
The Bakelite viewers appear structurally sound with typical light surface scratching. The paper reels and sleeves show moderate age-related yellowing, minor staining, and edge wear, which is typical for paper ephemera of this era.
