Overview
An exquisite Japanese porcelain bowl decorated in the highly refined Nabeshima style, featuring a vibrant underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamel design of an open treasure box (Takarabako) overflowing with auspicious symbols. The exterior is beautifully painted with classic underglaze blue floral sprays and a traditional comb-tooth (Kushigozura) pattern around the high foot ring.
Story
Centuries ago, Nabeshima porcelain was produced exclusively as tribute gifts for the Shogun and imperial court. This bowl depicts a legendary treasure ship's cargo box, overflowing with magical items like the wish-granting jewel and sacred peaches of immortality.
Maker / Origin
While the original Okawachiyama kilns produced these wares under strict clan monopoly during the Edo period, the tradition was revived in the late 19th and 20th centuries by master workshops in Arita. These modern masters preserved the secret techniques, high foot rings, and flawless white porcelain bodies that defined the aristocratic ware.
Condition & Value
The bowl appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips, cracks, or hairline fractures. The enamel colors remain remarkably vibrant with minimal wear to the overglaze decoration. Excellent condition like this helps secure the higher end of the valuation.
