Overview

This is a beautifully painted porcelain cylindrical vessel, traditionally used as a hat stand or brush pot, featuring a hand-painted scholar or immortal triumphantly hoisting a massive red carp. The reverse side is decorated with three stylized flaming pearls, and the flat rim is finished with an iron-red diaper pattern border.

Story

In Chinese folklore, a carp leaping over the Dragon Gate transforms into a powerful dragon. This vibrant scene depicts a figure celebrating that exact moment of ultimate success, serving as a visual wish for high achievement.

Maker / Origin

While unsigned, this piece comes from the historic tradition of Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China. During the late Qing and early Republic periods, private kilns flourished, producing highly expressive, narrative-driven wares for a rising merchant class who loved stories of folklore and status.

Condition & Value

The porcelain body shows minor firing flaws, pinholes, and iron spots consistent with period production. There is light wear to the overglaze enamels and minor surface grime, but no visible cracks, chips, or major restorations. Excellent preservation of the rim's red border.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
