Overview
A classic piece of American mercantile history, this walnut-stained spool cabinet served as a point-of-purchase display for Clark's 'Our New Thread.' It features the iconic recessed gold-leaf lettering and original brass 'ONT' teardrop pulls that once organized a rainbow of sewing silks.
Story
In the 1860s, George Clark revolutionized sewing by creating a thread strong enough for the new sewing machines. He called it 'Our New Thread' (O.N.T.). These cabinets were the silent salesmen of every Victorian general store.
Maker / Origin
The Clark family of Paisley, Scotland, brought their thread empire to Newark, NJ, in 1864. They eventually merged with their rivals, J&P Coats, to form the textile giant Coats & Clark, which remains a household name in sewing today.
Condition & Value
The cabinet shows significant surface wear, including a dark stain on the top and some loss to the gold lettering on the top drawer. The bottom drawer is missing its original glass/decal insert, which significantly impacts the value compared to a complete specimen.
