Overview

This is an elegant, elongated porcelain celery dish featuring a molded, scalloped rim highlighted with soft green and peach airbrushed tints. The center is decorated with a transfer-printed and hand-touched motif of green grapes and autumn leaves, a classic design for turn-of-the-century dining.

Story

During the Gilded Age, formal dinners were elaborate, multi-course theatrical events requiring highly specialized dishes. Celery was a luxury vegetable, served standing in tall vases or laid out on dedicated, elegant dishes like this one to signal the host's wealth and sophistication.

Maker / Origin

The underglaze mark featuring a crown over crossed batons with 'SILESIEN' and 'GERMANY' indicates production in the historic region of Silesia, a major European porcelain hub. This specific mark was used by factories like those in the Altwasser or Tiefenfurt districts to appeal to the lucrative export market, particularly in North America.

Condition & Value

The dish appears to be in very good antique condition with no visible chips, cracks, or hairline fractures. There is minor wear consistent with age on the base rim, and some tiny orange kiln-firing spots on the underside, which are original to manufacture. Excellent preservation of the delicate green and peach rim tinting.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
