Overview
A charming set of miniature tea glass holders, or podstakanniki, featuring highly detailed, repoussé-style relief work depicting putti and pastoral scenes. These holders feature figural handles shaped like cherubs or stylized figures, cradling delicate, removable glass liners. They represent the European fascination with Russian tea culture blended with German romantic design.
Story
In the late 1800s, Russian tea culture swept through European high society, making the 'podstakannik' a must-have luxury. German silversmiths in Hanau quickly adapted this trend, creating highly decorative, romanticized versions for Western salons. These miniature holders allowed guests to sip hot, spiced tea without burning their fingers.
Maker / Origin
While Russian workshops dominated this form, German silversmiths in Hanau became world-famous for creating 'Historismus' silver—exquisite revivals of Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo styles. Hanau makers were masters of fantasy, often using pseudo-hallmarks that paid homage to historical guild marks while creating highly detailed, romanticized functional art for the wealthy elite.
Condition & Value
The metal holders show a beautiful, dark patina in the recessed areas, which highlights the relief work, though there is some surface tarnish and minor wear consistent with age. The glass liners appear intact without major chips, which is excellent as these are easily broken.
