Overview
An exceptionally large 44cm porcelain charger decorated in the vibrant Ao-Kutani (green Kutani) style. The interior features a dense, swirling sea of green waves populated by golden Shishi (mythical lion-dogs), auspicious coins, and flaming jewels, while the reverse is decorated in underglaze blue and iron-red with a spurious Chinese Ming dynasty apocryphal mark.
Story
Created during Japan's historic transition to the modern world, this massive charger depicts mythical Shishi lions swimming through a stylized ocean. The design represents courage navigating the turbulent waves of life, a powerful message for its 19th-century owner.
Maker / Origin
While bearing an apocryphal Chinese Ming Dynasty Chenghua mark on the reverse—a common practice in Japan to denote high quality—this piece was crafted by master decorators in either the Kutani or Arita workshop regions. These artisans specialized in reviving the bold, rich enamel styles of the 17th century for a new generation of domestic and international collectors.
Condition & Value
The charger appears to be in very good condition with vibrant enamels and intact gilding. There are typical minor firing imperfections, spur marks on the base from the kiln, and light wear consistent with age. Excellent condition for a piece of this scale commands a premium.
