Overview

A set of six American sterling silver citrus or grapefruit spoons in Towle's elegant 'Georgian' pattern, originally patented in 1895. Characterized by pointed bowls with subtle facets designed specifically for segmenting fruit, these pieces feature fine beaded borders, delicate scrollwork, and a shell drop on the reverse.

Story

Patented in 1895, these pointed spoons were invented for the Victorian elite, who demanded a hyper-specialized sterling utensil for every single course, including morning grapefruit.

Maker / Origin

Towle Silversmiths traces its roots directly back to colonial silversmith William Moulton II in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in 1690. Officially established as Towle in 1882, the firm became one of America’s preeminent luxury silversmiths, celebrated for intricate die-struck flatware patterns.

Condition & Value

Very good antique condition with crisp pattern details, clearly legible hallmarks, and no monograms. Displays minor, standard surface micro-scratches and light patina/tarnish appropriate for age and light use, which does not diminish collector value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
