Overview

This is a substantial silver-plated double-handled serving tray, marked 'E.P. ON COPPER' with lead mounts. It features elaborate chased foliate scrollwork on the well surface and a heavy, cast shell-and-scroll decorative rim and handles in the Rococo Revival style.

Story

Stamped 'E.P. ON COPPER' on the reverse, this mid-century tray was built using electroplating technology perfected over a century earlier. Its heavy lead-weighted handles and rim provided luxury weight without the cost of solid sterling.

Maker / Origin

The maker's mark features 'ES' inside a clipped rectangle alongside text reading 'E.P. ON COPPER / LEAD MTS'. Electroplated nickel silver and copper hollowware was produced by scores of American manufacturers during the mid-20th century entertainment boom, catering to suburban dinner parties.

Condition & Value

Appears in very good vintage condition with bright plating on the top surface. Minor surface scratches on the underside consistent with age. Good plating preservation maintains value towards the higher end of the range.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
