Overview
This ceramic tripod vessel is a classic tripod censer featuring an opalescent sky-blue glaze accented with a distinctive copper-purple splash. Modeled after the famed Song Dynasty Jun ware, it rests on three unglazed cabriole feet with an unglazed, buff-terracotta base.
Story
Over 800 years ago, Song dynasty potters discovered that adding copper oxide created dramatic purple 'flames' across sky-blue glazes. Censers like this were essential for scholar tables and altars, perfuming ancient rooms.
Maker / Origin
While originating at the historic Jun kilns in Henan province during the Song and Jin dynasties, the dramatic appeal of Jun ware led Chinese potters through the Ming, Qing, and modern eras to continually revive and reinterpret these legendary forms and glazes.
Condition & Value
The censer is in very good condition with typical age crazing throughout the glaze. The unglazed base and feet show natural kiln-firing characteristics and light surface dirt without major chips or structural cracks. Value is determined by age, provenance, and kiln attribution.
