Overview
This is an ornate, gilded wall pediment featuring classic Rococo-revival flourishes, including acanthus leaves, scrolls, and a central palmette. Originally designed to crown a mirror, doorway, or headboard, it represents a mid-century American innovation in home decor manufacturing.
Story
In the 1940s through the 1970s, Syracuse Ornamental Company revolutionized home decor by casting wood pulp and resin into intricate molds. This pediment brought the lavish look of hand-carved European palaces to mid-century American suburbs.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1890 by Austrian immigrant Adolph Holstein, the Syracuse Ornamental Company (Syroco) began by producing hand-carved wooden details for local architecture. As demand grew, Holstein developed a groundbreaking compression molding process using wood flour, waxes, and resins.
Condition & Value
The pediment appears to be in good vintage condition with some light wear to the gilded finish, particularly along the raised edges. There are no obvious breaks or missing scrollwork sections, which is common for these composite pieces. Maintaining the original finish is key to preserving its value.
