Overview

An English Victorian blue and white transferware dish decorated in the classic 'Asiatic Pheasants' pattern by J.F. Wileman (Foley Potteries), preserved in a custom Japanese fitted collector's box with Meiji-period ink inscriptions.

Story

Imported to Japan during early Meiji modernization, this English dish was carefully treasured and given a custom lacquered box dated Meiji 5 (1872).

Maker / Origin

James F. Wileman operated the famed Foley Potteries in Fenton, Staffordshire, producing durable earthenware and ironstone during the mid-to-late 19th century before evolving into the company that created the renowned Shelley China.

Condition & Value

The ceramic shows widespread fine crazing, light tea-staining, and surface wear consistent with age and use. The antique paper and wooden box shows expected edge wear, tearing, and discoloration. Condition is fair-to-good for Victorian earthenware, with the pairing to its original storage box supporting value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
