Overview
This is a charming Japanese porcelain condiment pot featuring a built-in three-legged stand, matching lid, and its original serving spoon. It is decorated in the vibrant, raised-slip 'moriage' style, which gives the colorful floral and cloud motifs a tactile, three-dimensional quality against a matte slip background.
Story
Crafted in Japan during the interwar export boom, this vessel was designed specifically to bring a touch of Eastern exoticism to Western dining tables. Its raised clay decoration was applied by hand using a squeeze-bottle technique similar to icing a cake.
Maker / Origin
While marked simply 'Made in Japan' for export compliance, this piece was produced in one of the many specialized ceramic workshops in Nagoya or Yokohama. These studios employed highly skilled decorators who adapted traditional Satsuma and Kutani techniques for Western household items like mustard pots, jam jars, and tea sets.
Condition & Value
The set appears to be in very good vintage condition with its original spoon intact. There is minor wear to the gold gilding on the lid's loop handle and the spoon handle, as well as light staining along the inner rim of the pot from historical use. Excellent preservation of the delicate raised moriage beads.
