Overview

This is a magnificent Danish Modern high-back rocking chair, designed by the legendary Illum Wikkelsø and manufactured by Niels Eilersen. Crafted from rich, warm teak, it features a beautifully curved spindle back, sculptural armrests, and an integrated, adjustable headrest cushion. It is a masterclass in mid-century ergonomic design, blending organic form with functional comfort.

Story

In 1960s Denmark, designer Illum Wikkelsø believed a rocking chair should be built for absolute relaxation at any angle. He sculpted this frame to cradle the human body, turning a traditional nursery item into a high-design statement.

Maker / Origin

Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was a giant of Danish modernism who trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts. He established his own studio in 1954, becoming famous for furniture that emphasized clean lines, organic curves, and deep physical comfort.

Condition & Value

The teak frame appears to be in excellent structural condition with a beautiful, rich patina and minimal visible scuffing. The tweed upholstery and headrest cushion appear clean and well-preserved, though we would need to verify if they are original or high-quality replacements.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
