Overview
A classic piece of mid-century Americana, this lithographed tin sand pail features whimsical anthropomorphic illustrations of a squirrel in a stylized treehouse.
Story
Post-war American summers were defined by the clatter of metal buckets against wooden boardwalks as families flocked to the coasts. These pails were often sold at 'five and dime' stores for pennies, intended to be used for a single vacation and then left behind or discarded.
Maker / Origin
While no mark is visible, this pail follows the tradition of the Ohio Art Company or J. Chein & Co., the titans of the American tin-toy industry.
Condition & Value
The pail shows honest age-related wear, including surface oxidation (rust) along the rim, handle, and bottom edge where the tin plating has worn thin. The central lithographed image is remarkably well-preserved with only minor scuffing. This level of wear is expected for a functional beach toy and confirms its vintage authenticity.

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.
